Clarion County grant to help with trail repair

The Redbank Valley Trail Association is receiving help from Clarion County to repair sections of the trail damaged by the July 19 flood.

The $5,000 grant from the county will be used to aid the restoration of the Long Run Bridge. The funding is from the Marcellus Shale Gas Legacy Fund.

The association website says a “wall of water followed Long Run upstream taking out roads, trees and rocks” creating a huge “gash” in the trail.

Association volunteers created a bypass at mile 19. Visitors are cautioned not to trespass beyond the orange caution fences.

Clarion County Commissioner Wayne Brosius said total damage to the trail was estimated at $100,000, and that the new bridge would be wide enough to accommodate emergency vehicles.

The association, Brosius said, had already received a $25,000 grant from another trails organization.

The commissioners also noted work on the East Brady tunnel was set to begin this morning.

Work will include rehabilitation of the northern portal of the tunnel and construction of approximately 3 miles of trail from the northern portal to mile post 75.23; Americans with Disabilities Act access, landscaping, project sign and other related site improvements.
