Clarion County commissioners approve applications for projects

Clarion County commissioners approved two applications Tuesday for projects designed to aid economic development in the region.

Dane Higby, a senior associate from Delta Development in Harrisburg, requested a letter of support from the commissioners for Clarion Industries’ application for funds for a direct route from Fiberboard Avenue to Route 66.

Delta is a consultant for the county.

Commissioners agreed to support the request for $1.745 million in multimodal funds for the extension of Fiberboard Avenue.

“The intent of the project is to relieve some of the traffic and safety issues on Clarion River Hill, Route 322,” said Higby. “That two-lane roadway gets icy in the winter so it is a hazard when trucks are coming in and out of there all day long.”

Higby said the proposed route would reduce travel to the plant by about 1.6 miles. The proposed entry onto Route 66 would be near a lot used to park modular homes.

Commissioners also approved a resolution authorizing the submission of an application for $2 million in funds for activities associated with the Greystar Knox manufacturing plant building project at the former Knox glass plant property.

“This will provide a launching pad for what we believe will be a great opportunity in Knox and the Clarion County area,” said Andy Mest of Greystar. “We look forward to getting operational.”
