Clarion coroner identifies man who died in house fire

Clarion County Coroner Dan Shingledecker has identified the man who died in a house fire Sunday in Elk Township.

Eugene Grantz, 76, died of accidental smoke inhalation inside his 382 Buckhorn Road home, Shingledecker said.

The fire was reported at about 5 a.m., and the blaze fully engulfed Grantz’s single-wide trailer with several small additions and a garage, Shippenville-Elk fire Chief Steve Merryman said Sunday. The house and garage were destroyed, Merryman said.

Grantz and another person inside the building escaped, but he went back inside to fight the fire and didn’t come back out, according to what Merryman said he was told at the scene.

The blaze was accidentally started by an electrical malfunction, according to a state fire marshal report.

Five volunteer fire departments responded to the blaze, and the scene was fully cleared in about eight hours, according to Clarion County 911.
