The Comet Food Warehouse in Clarion is closing, but the closing date isn’t known.

A member of the management team, who declined to be identified, said Monday the staff had heard rumors of the closing over the weekend, and those rumors were confirmed Monday morning.

The manager said he was told the owner of the store, Jefferson Wholesale Grocery Co. in Punxsutawney, is also closing the J.G. Food Warehouse in Clearfield.

He said the Clarion store closing would affect about 25 employees.

No additional information was available Monday afternoon.

The Levy family in Punxsutawney founded Jefferson Wholesale Grocery about 50 years ago. The company had seen a steady decline in business and closed the wholesale division several years ago.

At that time, the company continued to operate three retail stores – West End Comet in Punxsutawney, Comet in Clarion and J.G. Food Warehouse in Clearfield.

C&S Wholesale, a New Hampshire-based firm with a warehouse in DuBois, provided the stores with merchandise at that time. The Punxsutawney location closed about five years ago.

The Levy family has been in business since the early 1900s when Jacob Levy operated a flour and feed mill. Later, the company delivered groceries by horse and buggy.

In 1931, the company added its own line of groceries and changed its name to Jefferson Grocery Company.
