Career Center students raise funds for cancer patients

From staff reports

Students at the Clarion County Career Center observed national Cancer Awareness Month and held the center’s Coins for a Cure fundraising campaign in October.

All donated funds will be given to the Clarion Sunshine Project at BHS/Cancer Care at Clarion Hospital to help patients who are going through cancer treatments.

This year marks the Career Center’s 11th year of collecting donations for the program.

Career Center director Traci Wildeson challenged the students to reach a goal of $3,600 this year. They surpassed that amount with a total of $4,982.45.

The 11-year total of contributions to the Sunshine Project is $46,785.31.

The school went back to the original campaign format of placing coin containers in all the classrooms to allow students to contribute their loose change to the cause.

T-shirts were sold to raise money, and a generous contribution by Ron Flick also added to the amount raised.

To celebrate the students passing the goal amount, Wildeson agreed to kiss a pig at student assemblies that were held Wednesday.

Tracy Myers, nurse manager at the Cancer Center, attended the assemblies and shared with the students how important the funds are to assist patients with some of their financial burdens.

Myers said it allows the patients to concentrate on their treatments and getting better, instead of worrying about how they will cover the extra costs of being off work or paying for gas and other expenses.
